press release
Design Projections is organizing a series of film nights, each focusing on a specific design discipline, and consisting of both feature-length and short films. Each edition will be an opportunity to view works that often do not receive wide distribution.
The project also aims to stimulate ideas, create opportunities and facilitate knowledge sharing.
Design Projections believes that this initiative will reinforce Montréal's position as a creative city and Canada as a country where design is promoted and valued.
First event: Typography
The inaugural edition of Design Projections will have typography as its theme. Truly a cornerstone of any graphic designer’s work, typography plays a fundamental role in our daily lives, providing both framework and form for the messages that are aimed our way. Each of the films screened will present a unique perspective on the discipline.
Main program
The documentary Typeface, here presented in its Canadian première screening, profiles North America’s last wood typeface shop, today the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The film delves into the heritage left by this lost art’s craftspeople and workers, and explores how designers and artists today are incorporating traditional wood and lead type in their work.
Typeface had its world première in April 2009 at the International Film Festival in Breda, Netherlands, and also screened at the Graphic Design Museum in that same city. Its North American première was this past July, as the opening film of TypeCon2009 (organized in partnership with AIGA Atlanta).
Selected short films
Before the main feature, a selection of various short films about typography will also be screened. The two curators selected films directed by Hillman Curtis, Peter Bilak, Stephen Faustina and Death by Cyan (amongst many others).
